Adorable Albino Turtle Found On Australian Beach
Whilst surveying a green turtle nest on Sunday members of the Coolum and North Shore Coast Care group in Australia made a pretty amazing discovery amongst the 122 tiny hatchlings inside the nest, a rare albino baby turtle.
"Albino hatchlings are extremely rare; it probably occurs at the rate of one in many hundreds of thousands of eggs that are laid," species expert Dr Col Limpus told ABC News. An already threatened species, this makes the albino turtle incredibly rare and due to it's unique colour the chances that it will reach maturity are even slimmer - about one in a thousand.
Despite the odds being stacked against him volunteers of the group report that the turtle made it from the beach to the ocean safely. Here's to hoping he lives long enough to reach full maturity!
Albino Turtle, Sri Lanka
On Sri Lanka's southwest coast is the small town of Kosgoda where a sea turtle conservation project has been set up. Some locals were taking the turtle eggs from the beach to sell them for eating, harming the turtle population. These conservation projects take the eggs from the beach or buy them back if they've been taken, hatch the eggs and release them back to the sea. This is a video of a very rare albino turtle which we met inside the sanctuary.
