Journey From A Bus Conductor To Becoming India's Highest Paid Superstar!

Superstar Rajinikant, who is fondly known as Thalaivaa, is way more than just an actor, he is almost considered as a God especially when it comes to his huge fan following down South.

He is the most bankable superstar, always earning record-breaking collection at the box-office. Rajinikant's latest release 'Kabali' is already houseful, despite the advance booking of tickets, people were in the lines from midnight in the hope of film's ticket. 'Kabali' hit 400 screens in the US, which is the biggest release for a Rajinikant movie. In the US or Japan, things were no different. Rajinikant has a huge fan base in both the countries.

On the occasion of Rajinikant's latest release 'Kabali' we bring his life journey as how a modest Bus Conductor Becoming India's Highest Paid Actor.

Rajinikant was born as Shivaji Rao Gaekwad on December 12, 1950 in a Marathi family in Bangalore. He was named after the Maratha warrior, Chhatrapati Shivaji. Rajinikant was the fourth child of Jijabai and Ramojirao Gaekwad, who was a police constable. In the initial years of his                                childhood and youth, he struggled a lot due to financial issues. When he was nine years old, he lost his mother, to support his family he also had to coolie.

As a child, he was studious and "mischievous" with a great interest in cricket, football and basketball. It was during this time he began acting in plays at the math. His aspiration towards theatre grew at the math and was once given an opportunity to enact the role of Ekalavya's friend from the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

At the start of his career, he took up a number of odd jobs including being a carpenter and a coolie. He was later employed by Bangalore Transport Service (BTS), where he worked as a bus conductor. Even as a conductor he knew how to entertain and pull a crowd with his unique style. He was very famous among the passengers and other bus conductors due to his unique style of ticketing and to whistle.

To saw his style, Rajni's friend suggest him to left the job and join the Madras Film Institute. It was during this time that he came across an advert for acting classes at the Madras Film Institute and decided to join against the wishes of his family. His friend and co-worker Raj Bahadur supported him financially during his course.

During one of his onstage performances at the institute,Tamil film director K Balachander noticed him and advised him to learn Tamil, which Rajinikant followed without delay. Rajinikant was given an acting break by K Balachander in his Tamil movie nkgd 'Apoorva Raagangal' in 1975, with Kamal Haasan and Srividya in the lead. The movie was well received and went on to win three National Awards. The following year he forayed into Kannada films with 'Katha Sangama', directed by Puttanna Kanagal.

Director S. P. Muthuraman revamped Rajinikant's onscreen image entirely and first experimented with him in 'Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri' (1977) in a slightly negative role in the first half of he film and later as a protagonist. Soon after, J. Mahendran's 'Mullum Malarum' established Rajinikant in Tamil cinema.

Banking in on the success of 'Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri', Muthuraman made melodrama 'Aarilirunthu Arubathu Varai', where Rajinikant played a hero who sacrifices everything for his siblings. This was the turning point in his career, where he went from an actor to a performer who not only enthralled his audience but moved them to tears.

Between 1975 to 1977, Rajinikant took up a number of villainous roles in films like '16 Vayadhinilae', 'Moondru Mudichu' and 'Avargal'. Towards the end of the 80s, Rajinikant had gained immense popularity down South. During this phase of his career, Rajinikant abruptly chose to quit acting, but was coaxed back.

He made a comeback with 'Billa', which was remake of Bollywood film, 'Don'. His double role made the film a huge commercial success. 'Billa' was followed by a row of hits like 'Murattukaalai', 'Pokkiri Raja', 'Thanikattu Raja', 'Naan Mahaan Alla', 'Pudukavithai' and 'Moondru Mugam'. K. Balachander's first home production, 'Netrikan' proved to be yet another milestone in Rajinikant's career.

In 1983, Rajinikant made his Bollywood debut with 'Andha Kanoon' along with Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini. The film was well received and went on to become the highest-grossing film at that time. Since their first film together, Rajinikant and Amitabh Bachchan have shared a great friendship and worked together in Hindi films such as 'Geraftaar' and 'Hum'. His other Bollywood movies were 'Chalbaaz' , 'Insaaniyat Ke Devta', 'Gangvaa', 'John Jani Janardhan', and many more.

'Basha' went on to become a huge blockbuster and gained cult status, making him a demigod to his fans and followers. His film 'Muthu' was the first Tamil film to be dubbed into Japanese as 'Muthu: The Dancing Maharajah' became very popular in Japan.

As an actor his biggest USP is his Style, sense of humor and great comic timing. As Amitabh Bachchan is known for his Sharabi act likewise Rajinikant is famous for his signature style. Which he repeats several times. But it was his 150th film, 'Padayappa' that became the grandest success in his acting career. This film break all the records not only in Telugu film industry as well as in UK and USA.

He then took a sabbatical of almost three years, after which he starred in his home production, 'Baba', which released on August 15, 2002 amidst much fanfare and extreme hype. However, the film failed to live up to the expectations of his fans due to a weak script, which was written by Rajinikant himself. This was Rajinikant's second failure as a screenwriter after 'Valli'. Though the film covered its budget, it was considered a huge loss when compared to his other work.

He did big budget movies such as Sivaji (2007), Robot (2010) and Kochadaiiyan (2014)around this time. Robot, made at a cost of over Rs 100 crore, was considered to be the most expensive movie at the time. Sivaji became the first Tamil movie to be charted as one of the top-10 best films of United Kingdom and South Africa Box-Offices upon release.

When it comes to award and accolades, Rajinikant has won more than his fair share. He has won six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards – four Best Actor Awards and two Special Awards for Best Actor – and a Filmfare Best Tamil Actor Award. He is also a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honour.

Rajinikant married Latha Rangachari, a student of Ethiraj College for Women, who interviewed him for her college magazine. The marriage took place on 26 February 1981. The couple have two daughters named Aishwarya Rajinikant and Soundarya Rajinikant. Aishwarya married actor Dhanush on 18 November 2004 and they have two sons, Yathra and Linga while His younger daughter, Soundarya, works in the Tamil film industry as a director, producer and graphic designer. She married industrialist Ashwin Ramkumar on 3 September 2010 and have a son Ved Krishna.
