The Smallest Countries in the World
With over 200 countries in the world, it's easy to believe that the word 'country' means a massive land area with a huge population. Well, this is not necessarily true, as some of the smallest nations boast similar population numbers as the bigger countries.
1. Monaco
The tiny state of Monaco covers only 0.7 square miles along the French Riviera on the French Mediterranean coast near Nice. It is home to the largest number of millionaires and billionaires per capita in the world and is the host of the most popular event in the world, known as Formula 1. Monaco is small but mighty in many ways.
2. Nauru
Covering an area of 8.5 square miles, Nauru is the smallest island country in the world. As an island nation located in the Central Pacific, you are bound to be surrounded by beaches, cliffs, and ocean.
3. Vatican
The world's tiniest state is Vatican as it is only 0.2 square miles. This petite country, also known as the 'Holy See', is the spiritual centre for the world's Roman Catholics.
4. San Marino
Completely surrounded by Italy, San Marino also known as the 'Most Serene Republic', stretching only 24 square miles. It is the 3rd smallest country in Europe and 5th in the world.
5. Luxembourg
Commonly described as 'the country you can drive across in an hour', Luxembourg is definitely on our list. Perhaps it is small in size, but it is packed with history and culture. Luxembourg Vianden and Bourscheid castles are among some of Europe's best preserved medieval fortifications.
6. Brunei
Brunei is officially nicknamed the Abode of Peace but is locally known as the 'Shelfare State' due to the dominant role of shell oil. This miniscule country is one of the world's smallest and wealthiest nations ever.
7. Taiwan
It may be dwarfed by its neighbouring countries, but since becoming the first true Chinese democracy in the 1990's, Taiwan has developed into a vibrant society. This nation may be small, but it makes up for it through its abundance of architecture, culture, and history.
Monaco - Travel Destinations
Monaco is located on the French Riviera in Western Europe. Bordered by France on three sides, with one side bordering the Mediterranean Sea, its center is about 16 km (9.9 mi) from Italy, and is only 13 km (8.1 mi) north east of France.
